Chapter 8

“Hurry up,” Cel told the others as they gathered what they could. “We only need enough for us to get over the pass.”

Beni seemed fine, but the others were in shock. Losing Gorgie had hit them hard, and they moved like zombies as they put forever rats and water into the backpacks Ibrahim pulled out of a locker.

“You don’t need that,” Cel told Anne as the older woman started to put binders into her pack.

“But they’re company—”

“The Wolvics don’t care about those, and they’ll slow you down. Leave them,” Cel snapped.

Anne’s mouth dropped open, but she complied.

“All of you, you’ve got two minutes. Speed it up.”

She opened the door and looked up the drive. Beni was crouched at the top, watching down the road, the riot gun in his hand. He turned and shook his head.

Cel was sure that the Wolvics would send a patrol down the road to clear it, and she wanted to be long gone before they did it. There were small access paths crisscrossing the fields, and they’d be taking them to get to the road that would take them over the hills. It would take them longer than using the main road, but they’d be less exposed.

She took a moment to look back down at her wristcomp. The weapons station they’d spotted was an FKV-351. According to the Wolvic Order of Battle, it was not designed for stand-alone emplacement but was normally used for defending bases or with expeditionary Terrain Denial forts. The Wolvics were almost assuredly erecting a fort to stop the Caperican forces at Camp Lassiter from coming down out of the mountains.

According to the data, a 351-series fort took about 20 hours to erect and come online. If the Wolvics started as soon as they arrived, the fort would be operational in another four hours or so. Hopefully, the Wolvics would be preoccupied enough with that and ignore the eight of them until then, but Cel wouldn’t bet on that. Most military commanders would be too concerned with security to ignore any threat, no matter how small.

“Thirty-seconds,” Cel told the others.

She motioned for Beni to join them and asked, “Do you think they’re coming?” as he came into the office. She was sure of it herself, and she fleetingly wondered if she just wanted Beni to confirm her own determination.

He shrugged. “They should have cleared all of this first. But you heard that desyatnik. He told their soltnik that they needed better security. Maybe now he’ll listen.”

Cel was afraid of that. Not that a mere soltnik, the equivalent of a Confederation captain, had that much pull. That was too junior a rank, she would have thought, to be emplacing a fort. But when word made it up to a more experienced officer, maybe even a polkovnik, that officer would address their security. Cel wasn’t going to take any chances. It was time to leave.

“Time’s up. Let’s go. Ibrahim, you’re leading, right?”

The man nodded, and slowly, the group filed out the back
